How a Special Enrollment Period Works

Here are the qualifying life events that trigger a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) for Individual & Family plans with BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina. You typically have 60 days from the event to enroll:
  • Getting married or divorced
  • Having or adopting a child (or placement in foster care)
  • Moving to a new coverage area (new ZIP code or county)
  • Becoming a U.S. citizen
  • Losing other health coverage
You'll need documentation to verify your event (like a marriage certificate, birth record, move notice, etc.), and it must be submitted before your new plan goes into effect. If you’re unsure which category fits your situation, contact our local health insurance advisors for help!
